What is Facebook?

Facebook is a social networking website. Users can join networks organised by city, workplace, school or region to interact with others online. Facebook users can add friends, send messages and build a personal profile to tell people about themselves. The members of Facebook were originally Harvard students, this then extended to other U.S. colleges. Facebook just kept on expanding, and can now be used by anyone over the age of 13. Facebook currently has over 200 million active users worldwide. A February 2009 Compete.com study found that Facebook was the most used social networking site, followed by myspace.

Every user’s profile page has a Wall, where they can post messages and photos. This can be seen by any person allowed by the privacy settings chosen by the user. Attachments can also be added to the Wall.

Facebook has a blogging feature called Facebook Notes, which allows tags and embeddable images. Blogs can be imported from many blogging services.

Facebook launched the Facebook Platform in May 2007. This provided a framework for software developers to create applications that interact with core Facebook features. Facebook Markup Language was introduced simultaneously, and is a variation of HTML, with more limited functions. Facebook Markup Language enables the developers to customize the look and feel of applications. Also available to them is Facebook Javascript.

Using the Platform, Facebook launched several applications, including Marketplace, where users can place classified ads. Categories are: For Sale, Housing, Jobs and Other. Ads can be in available or wanted format.

Beacon is part of Facebook’s advertisement system that sends data from external websites to Facebook, for the purpose of targeted advertisements, and allowing users to share these with friends.
